How To Prosper In Everything You Do (Psalm 1)

What if the secret to success in every area of your life has been sitting in your Bible all along?

Many Christians desire success in their finances, relationships, health, family, and spiritual lives. Yet, despite their efforts, they often struggle to experience the results they desire.

The good news is that God has already provided principles for prosperity in His Word. Psalm 1 reveals how we can position ourselves for a fruitful life by following His instructions.

However, Biblical prosperity is not simply about giving money, praying for blessings, or expecting everything to happen overnight. Success requires obedience, wisdom, meditation, and understanding God’s timing.

A long road with the words ROAD TO SUCCESS.God Wants You To Prosper: Success Begins With The Counsel You Follow

Psalm 1:3 makes an extraordinary statement about the person who follows God’s ways:

“And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.” – Psalm 1:3

Notice those final words: whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.

This is a remarkable promise! But we must understand the conditions surrounding it.

Some prosperity preachers suggest that giving money guarantees financial abundance. However, Psalm 1 presents a much deeper picture.

Prosperity comes from living according to God's wisdom rather than following the world's principles. Share on X

Before describing the prosperous tree, the psalmist explains the behavior of a blessed person.

“Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.” – Psalm 1:1

The first principle of prosperity involves avoiding ungodly counsel.

Consider the advice influencing your decisions. Are your financial habits, relationships, and daily routines shaped by Scripture or worldly thinking?

I remember a time when I regularly ate fast food. On one occasion, I ordered some freshly prepared chips and thought something was wrong with them.

Why? Because I had become so accustomed to eating chips that had been sitting around that fresh food tasted unusual.

The lesson is simple: When you become accustomed to something unhealthy, what is genuinely good can initially feel uncomfortable.

The same happens spiritually. God’s wisdom may seem strange when we have spent years following ungodly advice.

Avoiding bad counsel is only the beginning. Psalm 1 identifies something we must actively embrace.

“But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.” – Psalm 1:2

The word “delight” describes genuine pleasure and joy.

God doesn’t merely want us to read Scripture out of obligation. He wants us to enjoy His Word and recognize the wonderful promises and wisdom it contains.

One way to develop this joy is to consider what Scripture actually reveals.

When you discover a promise from God, think about its meaning. Consider how it applies to your circumstances and rejoice in the fact that God’s Word is trustworthy.

The more you understand Scripture, the more reasons you discover to delight in it. Share on X

Meditation is another essential principle for Biblical success. It involves thinking deeply about God’s Word, revisiting its teachings, and considering how to apply them.

This isn’t something reserved for Sunday mornings. You can meditate while driving, preparing meals, working, or spending time with your family.

I experienced an important reminder of this while collecting a car my dad had purchased for my niece Grace.

Driving the beautiful white Audi convertible on a sunny day, I began praying that experiencing God’s goodness and blessings would become something I could receive with gratitude rather than discomfort.

Later, while travelling with my daughter Anna, I encouraged her to develop that same attitude. Repeatedly considering God’s promises helps transform how we think, what we expect, and how we respond to opportunities.

The more familiar you become with God’s Word, the more naturally you can begin applying His wisdom.

Psalm 1:3 contains another important phrase:

…that bringeth forth his fruit in his season…

Notice that the tree produces fruit in his season, not necessarily immediately after being planted. This teaches us that God’s timing is the best timing.

Just as farmers must plant seeds, nurture their crops, and wait for the harvest, Christians must consistently apply Biblical principles while trusting God with the results.

I remember going through a difficult period when I felt discouraged about my financial circumstances and responsibilities as a father. During that season, I read a book that reminded me that my identity wasn’t determined by my bank balance or possessions.

That reminder helped me recognize that I was already blessed, even before my circumstances changed.

A farmer who refuses to plant cannot reasonably expect a harvest. Similarly, we cannot neglect God’s instructions and expect to enjoy the results of following them.

The Bible reminds us:

“The sluggard will not plow by reason of the cold; therefore shall he beg in harvest, and have nothing.” – Proverbs 20:4

Every season presents opportunities to prepare for what comes next. Whether you’re building a business, strengthening your marriage, improving your health, or growing spiritually, the principles remain the same.

Follow God’s wisdom, reject ungodly counsel, delight in Scripture, and consistently practice what you learn.
