Why Biblical Men Should Be Businessmen

As a Christian entrepreneur, you might wonder if pursuing a business is in line with your faith. The truth is, many Biblical men were businessmen, and their stories serve as powerful examples for us today.

In this post, we’ll explore the Biblical foundation of entrepreneurship and how you, too, can start a business that honors God and serves others.

I’ll also show you how to get started quickly with a business based on the skills you already have.

When we think of businessmen, we often picture modern-day CEOs or tech giants. However, Biblical men were also entrepreneurs. Take Peter and Andrew, for example.

These brothers were fishermen—a business that provided them with the freedom to work when they chose and to support themselves through their craft.

Just like Peter and Andrew, today’s Christians can leverage their skills to create a business that meets a need in the market.

“And he saith unto them, Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.” – Matthew 4:19

This calling shows us that even in their everyday work, Peter and Andrew were following God’s purpose for their lives. Their business not only supported them but also served as a platform for ministry.

This model of combining work and faith is still relevant today.

Business does not have to be secular—it can be a powerful vehicle for fulfilling God’s calling in our lives. Share on X

Whether you’re a skilled tradesman, a teacher, or a digital marketer, your business can honor God and serve others by solving real problems.

Starting a business can be intimidating, especially for Christians concerned about the love of money and the potential for greed. However, the Bible offers wisdom on how to approach business with integrity.

The key to success in business is not about chasing money but about gaining wisdom. Share on X

Wisdom, as described in the Bible, is the true magnet for wealth.

When you build your business on Biblical principles, you protect yourself from the dangers of greed. You also open the door for God’s blessings to flow through your work.

Aligning your business with values like honesty, humility, and service creates a strong foundation. This kind of business can grow financially while also giving you peace of mind and heart.

Just as wisdom guided Peter and Andrew, it can guide you today. Their trade supported their mission, and yours can too.

As a Christian entrepreneur, you have a unique opportunity. You can show the world that business success and godly values go hand in hand.

The way you run your business can be a living testimony. It speaks of God’s wisdom and His faithfulness in every part of life—including your finances.

Let’s look at some key figures from the New Testament who were involved in business and how their examples can inspire us:

  • Peter and Andrew: These two brothers were skilled fishermen, just as many modern entrepreneurs have specialized trades or services. Their business gave them flexibility and the opportunity to provide for their families while pursuing their calling. Despite the challenges, they had the freedom to make choices that honored God, such as when to fish and how to use their business for greater purposes.
  • John and James: Like Peter and Andrew, these brothers were fishermen. They were also part of Jesus’ inner circle, which underscores the importance of having a business that supports your faith and calling. Having the freedom to choose when and how to work gave them the ability to follow Jesus without the constraints of a traditional job. The business of fishing wasn’t just about providing sustenance—it was also about supporting the kingdom work that Jesus was calling them to.
  • Paul the Apostle: Paul was a tentmaker, traveling from place to place and using his trade to support his ministry. Paul’s tentmaking business not only provided him with income but also allowed him the flexibility to spread the gospel wherever he went. Despite his many travels, Paul always made sure his work was honorable and done with integrity.

These Biblical figures exemplify the power of entrepreneurship to provide both financial support and the freedom to serve God. Even the woman mentioned in Proverbs 31 is entrepreneurial.

Their lives show us that a business rooted in Biblical values can provide the resources we need to live out God’s calling, serve others, and fulfill our personal and family goals.

If you’re a Christian looking to step into entrepreneurship, you’re following in the footsteps of these Biblical heroes.

Starting your own business, especially one that’s rooted in your skills and expertise, offers numerous advantages:

  1. Freedom: A business allows you to set your own schedule. Unlike traditional jobs that require you to clock in and clock out, owning a business gives you the flexibility to work when it suits you and your family. Just as the disciples were able to choose when and where they worked, you too can create a business that fits your life and ministry.
  2. Leverage: With an online business, you can reach people across the globe, multiplying your impact and income. Just as Peter and Andrew sold fish to many, your business can serve a wide audience. In the digital age, there are almost no limits to the people you can reach with your products or services.
  3. Faith-Based Prosperity: Build your business on Biblical principles, and you’ll attract wisdom along with the blessings that follow. Your business can give you the financial freedom to live a more fulfilling life and serve others well. When you remain faithful and diligent, God honors your efforts. If you run your business with integrity, He will reward you—in His perfect timing.

“Commit thy works unto the Lord, and thy thoughts shall be established.” – Proverbs 16:3

Entrepreneurship is not just about making money—it’s about making a difference. And when your business is anchored in faith, you’re able to fulfill God’s calling on your life, impact the world, and create a legacy that lasts.
